Portugal · ARI investor residence

Portugal as your second base.

ARI can offer a Portuguese residence option with limited minimum presence. Its value depends on a currently eligible investment, a separate family assessment, and a realistic plan for renewal and any later status.

THE ROUTE AT A GLANCE

Capital creates an option. It does not promise a passport.

ARI and D3 have different legal bases. Under ARI, the asset, family, minimum presence and any later status must each stand on their own.

01 / Status

Portuguese investor residence under Article 90-A; no EU-wide settlement right.

02 / Investment

Five current statutory paths; new property purchases do not qualify.

03 / Presence

Seven days in year one, then 14 days per two-year period according to AIMA.

04 / Afterward

Renewal, permanent residence and naturalisation are distinct assessments.

01 / STARTING POINTS

What could this route make possible for you?

A residence right is valuable when its effect fits your life, family or business purpose.

01

A usable second base

Check who in your family can use the location and what schooling, healthcare and individual evidence they would need.

02

Capital with its own purpose

Funds, research, culture, job creation and company capital carry different risks, duties and possible exits.

03

Time to plan the move

Low minimum presence may give you flexibility. Permanent residence and citizenship each require separate review.

02 / LEGAL EFFECT

What the status grants. And what remains separate.

Residence, work, family and tax are not compressed into one promise.

LEGAL INSTRUMENT
Portugal · ARI investor residence

Autorização de Residência para Investimento under Art. 90-A; Portuguese residence, not EU-wide settlement.

03 / BASIS AND CAPITAL

What qualifies for this route.

AIMA lists five current paths: ten jobs; €500,000 for research; €250,000 for culture; €500,000 in qualifying non-property fund units; or €500,000 in company capital with employment duties. Property purchase does not qualify new applications.

Commitment, evidence and actual availability are reviewed for the individual case before funds are tied up.

04 / LIFE BEHIND THE PERMIT

Residence alone does not settle daily life.

Who may join you, what you may do locally and how tax is affected are three distinct questions.

01

Family and daily life

Family reunification is covered by the ARI portal, with its own evidence and procedure.

02

Work and business

AIMA describes the right to reside and work in Portugal. Regulated professions, specific company roles and work in other countries need separate review.

03

Tax position

A residence permit does not determine tax residence on its own. Home, actual presence, activity and applicable treaties require separate review.

05 / MAINTENANCE AND OUTLOOK

Keeping the status is part of the decision.

A sound plan considers admission alongside presence, renewal and the longer outlook.

01

Presence

AIMA states at least seven days in the first year and 14 days in each following two-year period. This ARI minimum does not replace separate permanent-residence or nationality requirements.

02

Renewal and duties

Maintain the eligible investment and renewal evidence; confirm AIMA's current procedure before each renewal.

03

Later status

Permanent residence and nationality require separate applications and criteria.

06 / PROCESS AND COSTS

The next step begins before applying.

Assess asset and source of funds, evidence investment, use ARI portal and plan biometrics and renewal.

Calculate the whole decision.

Where minimum amounts are stated, they are legal eligibility thresholds at the documented source date, not estimates of total cost. We review fees and other costs for the individual case before filing.

  • Qualifying investment or economic basis
  • Government fees and translations
  • Legal and tax review
  • Family, insurance and location
  • Ongoing duties and renewal
  • Potential exit or status change

07 / FIT AND LIMITS

When this route belongs on your shortlist.

A suitable permit serves a specific purpose. Where its rights or duties do not fit, comparison with another route begins.

ANSWER FIRST

The deciding question

Which currently eligible investment makes sense even without a future passport?

COMPARE AN ALTERNATIVE

Where this route stops

The lowest threshold is not a quality judgment: cultural support has different economics from a fund unit. Property is not a new ARI route; residence is neither a tax regime nor a passport promise.

08 / WHAT NBF EXAMINES

Know whether ARI serves your plan before investing.

You receive a comparison of eligible paths, a rights map for your family, and a plan for presence, evidence and renewal.

01

Investment comparison

Five paths by capital commitment, risk, purpose, evidence and possible exit. A specific product needs its own review.

02

Rights for the family

Who would use the location, what activity they plan, and which school, healthcare and tax questions remain open.

03

Maintenance and outlook

Presence, investment evidence and renewal in sequence; permanent residence and citizenship remain separate reviews.

09 / SOURCES AND REVIEW

The basis for the decision stays visible.

Program brochures can explain routes. Responsible authorities and the current case determine their legal effect and conditions.
