Malaysia · federal MM2H

A second home takes a real decision.

Malaysia My Second Home can give you and your family a multi-year base. Qualifying is only the first question: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and the special zone tie up different amounts of capital, require a property purchase, and place different limits on what you can do.

THE ROUTE AT A GLANCE

Understand the route before you commit.

A programme name says little about the rights you and your family will actually be able to use.

01 / Residence effect

Federal MM2H provides a renewable multiple-entry Social Visit Pass, not permanent residence. Silver has a five-year term; the passport's validity also affects the pass.

02 / Qualifying basis

Silver requires a USD 150,000 fixed deposit and, after approval, a home costing at least RM 600,000. Gold lists USD 500,000 and RM 1 million; Platinum lists USD 1 million and RM 2 million. The special zone has its own age- and location-specific rules. Participation and processing fees are additional.

03 / Permitted activity

The official Silver rules exclude business and professional activity. Other categories require a separate activity review; the pass alone is not blanket permission to work.

04 / Longer outlook

MM2H does not itself create an entitlement to permanent residence or citizenship.

01 / STARTING POINTS

What could this route make possible for you?

A residence right is valuable when its effect fits your life, family or business purpose.

01

A life that fits

Test the location, healthcare, and time you would actually spend there before committing capital and your family's plans.

02

Choose the right category

Compare Silver, Gold, Platinum, and the special zone by cost, property commitment, and permitted activity.

03

Plan for each family member

Find out who can join you and what residence or school documentation each person needs.

02 / LEGAL EFFECT

What the status grants. And what remains separate.

Residence, work, family and tax are not compressed into one promise.

LEGAL INSTRUMENT
Malaysia · federal MM2H

Federal MM2H provides a renewable multiple-entry Social Visit Pass, not permanent residence. Silver has a five-year term; the passport's validity also affects the pass.

03 / BASIS AND CAPITAL

What qualifies for this route.

Commitment, evidence and actual availability are reviewed for the individual case before funds are tied up.

04 / LIFE BEHIND THE PERMIT

Residence alone does not settle daily life.

Who may join you, what you may do locally and how tax is affected are three distinct questions.

01

Family and daily life

A spouse, eligible children, parents, and parents-in-law may be included. Children ages 21 through 34 face additional conditions; schooling and college require the appropriate documentation.

02

Work and business

The official Silver rules exclude business and professional activity. Other categories require a separate activity review; the pass alone is not blanket permission to work.

03

Tax position

A residence permit does not determine tax residence on its own. Home, actual presence, activity and applicable treaties require separate review.

05 / MAINTENANCE AND OUTLOOK

Keeping the status is part of the decision.

A sound plan considers admission alongside presence, renewal and the longer outlook.

01

Presence

The official guidelines set 90 days a year for participants under 50. For those 50 and older, the official overview and general guidelines conflict with the category pages and ministry FAQ; confirm the applicable presence rule in writing before applying.

02

Renewal and duties

Maintain the deposit, home, and pass conditions. Selling the property is generally restricted for ten years, with a separate exception for an eligible upgrade.

03

Later status

MM2H does not itself create an entitlement to permanent residence or citizenship.

06 / PROCESS AND COSTS

The next step begins before applying.

Start with your plans for living and working, then compare category, age, family eligibility, and tied-up capital. Applications go through a licensed MM2H operator and the designated One Stop Centre.

Calculate the whole decision.

Where minimum amounts are stated, they are legal eligibility thresholds at the documented source date, not estimates of total cost. We review fees and other costs for the individual case before filing.

  • Qualifying investment or economic basis
  • Government fees and translations
  • Legal and tax review
  • Family, insurance and location
  • Ongoing duties and renewal
  • Potential exit or status change

07 / FIT AND LIMITS

When this route belongs on your shortlist.

A suitable permit serves a specific purpose. Where its rights or duties do not fit, comparison with another route begins.

ANSWER FIRST

The deciding question

Which category supports the life you actually want in Malaysia—and how much capital are you willing to tie up?

COMPARE AN ALTERNATIVE

Where this route stops

Silver is not a route to local employment. The special zone's lower deposit threshold does not remove its property or location requirements.

08 / WHAT NBF EXAMINES

Choose the category that serves your life.

Receive a comparison of category rules against your housing, family and activity plans, including total cost and unresolved official guidance.

01

Life plan

Establish who will use the second base and what they intend to do there.

02

Capital commitment

Calculate the deposit, property purchase and ongoing costs by category.

03

Decision

Check presence, family and renewal against current official rules.

09 / SOURCES AND REVIEW

The basis for the decision stays visible.

Programme brochures can explain routes. Responsible authorities and the current case determine their legal effect and conditions.

The stated rules are grounded in the linked sources. Conditions, administrative practice and fit for your case are checked again before an individual recommendation.

The official conflict over presence at age 50 and older remains unresolved: overview, OSC comparison, and guidelines indicate no minimum, while MOTAC FAQ and category pages state 90 days without that exception. No official precedence rule was found; obtain written confirmation before a case-specific application.

THE NEXT DECISION

Which Malaysia category fits the life you want?

A second home should expand your options, not tie up capital without a reason. Compare your housing plan, property commitment, family needs and permitted activity before choosing a category.
