What Is Thailand Privilege, and What Happened to Thailand Elite?

The old name identifies the programme; your contract defines your rights.

Thailand Elite is the former name under which memberships were sold. The restructuring beginning in 2023 introduced Thailand Privilege, new tiers, and a different benefit system. The operator lists memberships sold before October 2023 separately as legacy packages no longer available to new applicants. This matters to existing members: a new price table does not replace your original contract.

Check your own card, remaining term, visa type, services, family rights, transfer rules, and upgrade options against your actual terms. Transfer fees for certain legacy memberships changed in 2026.

For new applicants, the choice is a five-, ten-, fifteen-, or twenty-year membership. It combines access to a Privilege Entry Visa with tier-specific services. Depending on the package, those may include member assistance and redeemable points for selected offerings. This is a prepaid route to staying in Thailand with associated services, not permanent residence or permission for every aspect of life there.

Reserve membership's twenty-year term does not mean twenty years of uninterrupted stay; that tier is available by invitation only.

Why clients consider Thailand Privilege

Someone traveling alone wants to return every winter without immediately moving their primary home. A family wants to test Thailand before committing to school and housing. A business owner is considering a second base. Others want an additional place to go if conditions elsewhere deteriorate.

These plans differ. What they share is the desire for time and a reliable route back. Thailand Privilege can provide multiyear visa access and certain services toward that goal.

Membership does not, however, change the rules for work, tax, dependents, or property. Which of those questions matters most depends on what you actually intend to do.

The crucial distinction: “I can enter repeatedly and stay longer” does not mean “I can continue everything as before.” Separate those propositions before deciding whether Privilege is the right purchase.

Membership term, entry, and permission to stay are three different things

For the relevant Privilege Entry (PE) Visa, the operator generally describes a stay stamp of one year per entry. The stamp actually issued controls; passport and visa expiration dates and any necessary extension need tracking. If you stay for more than 90 days without leaving, the applicable 90-day reporting rules also matter.

Operator assistance may help with administrative steps, but it does not remove your obligations or replace an immigration decision. Some older Special Entry visas carry different stamps, another reason not to equate legacy contracts with today's packages.

Must you leave after a year? A PE Visa holder may apply for a further one-year extension of the specific permission to stay at the immigration office for their residence. The operator currently states a THB 1,900 per-person fee, application up to 30 days before expiry, and an in-person photograph and fingerprint appointment. A fresh entry can also result in a new permission-to-stay stamp.

Both depend on a valid visa and passport and the immigration officer's decision; neither automatically extends the membership term. Your departure deadline is the last valid stay stamp, not the year printed on your membership card.

Who can apply?

Thailand's embassy in Budapest requires a foreign passport from an accepted country, an acceptable immigration history, and immigration approval. Certain earlier visa categories may require extra documents. The operator describes access for most nationalities, but that statement is no worldwide approval list for every passport situation.

Before paying, verify nationality, passport type, previous overstays, and current eligibility for the applicant. Visa-exempt tourist entry is a different permission from Privilege membership.

That distinction also changes with time. Since September 15, 2026, the Thai embassy in Washington describes 30 rather than 60 days of tourist visa exemption for qualifying US citizens. Other passports may follow other rules. An outdated 60-day list answers neither today's entry question nor Privilege eligibility.

Our assessment: You can value Privilege fairly once you separate the membership, visa, and days actually granted. If you read the longest number on the card as blanket permission to build a life and business in Thailand, you are buying something the program does not provide.

Who Benefits From Membership, and Who Probably Does Not?

Value follows actual use, household needs, and work.

Imagine someone who already knows Thailand. They intend to spend roughly five months a year there over the next five years, spread across several trips. They will not work in Thailand. They appreciate having a contact point and will genuinely use services during their stays. That is a credible Privilege case. The next question is which tier and which competing route provide the better value.

Traveling alone: Actually run the Bronze-versus-Gold numbers

Bronze and Gold have the same five-year membership term. They differ in price and in points for selected services:

TierUp-front membership feePoints per year
TierBronzeUp-front membership feeTHB 650,000 · about USD 19,400Points per yearNone
TierGoldUp-front membership feeTHB 900,000 · about USD 26,800Points per year20

Gold commits THB 250,000 more, about USD 7,400 at the European Central Bank reference rates of September 28, 2026. Points are redeemable for selected services; they are not unrestricted THB credit.

The measure is not a minimum number of days but which bookable services you would actually use. Points alone add no value to someone who does not need those services.

Neither tier automatically supplies work authorization, status for other family members, or a tax solution. Flights, housing, and health care are additional. The membership fee is committed up front.

Illustration, strictly as a cost yardstick: Assume this person spends five months a year over five winters in Thailand, or 25 months total. Spreading the one-time membership fee across those planned stays produces a notional THB 26,000 (about USD 775) per month for Bronze or THB 36,000 (about USD 1,070) for Gold. If the person travels only half as much, the notional amount doubles.

These figures are neither installments nor a break-even against tourist entry: The routes serve different purposes, lengths of stay, and benefits, and short visa-exempt entries cannot simply be chained as a substitute.

The real decision is whether supported multiyear access and benefits you will use justify the prepaid cost once work, family, and tax are separately resolved.

Verdict in this case: Without a documented DTV purpose or a qualifying LTR category, Bronze is the first Privilege comparison. Consider Gold only when specific services and their point costs justify the premium for this person.

If the plan changes, such as adding remote work or qualifying for LTR, reopen the route comparison before paying the membership fee.

A second destination: An option needs a way to activate it

Some readers do not expect to spend every winter in Thailand. They want another place they could reach if global conditions change. A prepared right to stay may be valuable for that reason too. Its price is then the cost of an option you may rarely use, not the price of a bargain vacation. A usable contingency plan needs the right status, valid passports, documents for each person, a realistic travel route, accommodation, and sufficient time to apply.

No one can guarantee today that entry will be possible on a particular future date. The option can still be valuable if you price it honestly as an option rather than as a promise of safety.

A family: One member does not equal one household

Families often underestimate the first quote. One person's membership does not automatically make a spouse, partner, or child a member. Supplemental memberships are possible in certain higher tiers under separate conditions. DTV and LTR also have their own dependent rules; an unmarried partner or adult child does not qualify simply because you call them family.

Make a written list for every person: eligibility, application route, term, individual fee, and documents.

Consider two adults and a child preparing for school in Bangkok. They need a residence route for all three in time for the school year, the school's documentation, and a realistic schedule. If the child's eligibility has yet to be confirmed, hold the household membership payment until the operator confirms the exact people in writing. School enrollment does not supply immigration permission; membership does not secure school admission. An advertised rate must also apply in writing to these family members on the payment date.

A business owner: Where a stay becomes work

If you plan to work locally, your first question differs from that of a winter visitor. A founder might spend four personal months in Bangkok while owning a company abroad. But daily operating decisions, staff management, client meetings, or work for a Thai entity require an assessment of the activities actually carried out. Privilege membership grants no general Thai work authorization.

Having a company or client overseas does not settle the question either. The activity, location, contractual relationship, and any Thai connection determine the review needed. For local work, establish the necessary authorization with qualified professionals and the responsible offices.

A decision against membership can be the right one: If you rarely visit, will not use the services, primarily need work authorization, or do not know the household cost, compare the alternatives first. The membership should fit your life, not the other way around.

Which Fits Better: Privilege, DTV, LTR, or a Work Route?

DTV and LTR answer different eligibility questions.

Program names often appear side by side as though they were three prices for the same product. They are not. Privilege is paid membership with visa access and benefits. The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) requires a specific documented purpose, including certain remote-work workcations.

The Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa is administered through Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) for people who meet a particular category and maintain its requirements. An appropriate work and residence route deserves first consideration if Thai employment or substantial local operations are central to your plans.

DTV: A documented purpose, not a discounted Privilege membership

The Royal Thai Embassy in London describes the DTV for workcations, specified Thai soft-power activities or medical treatment, and qualifying spouses and children under twenty. It is valid for five years, allows multiple entries, and provides for 180 days per entry; an extension of up to another 180 days may be requested under the applicable rules. Dependents make their own applications with supporting evidence.

The THB 500,000 financial evidence described in London's guidance is proof of available funds, not a visa purchase price. The responsible consular post and application documents depend on nationality and residence; London's list is not a worldwide fee schedule or universal checklist.

If you can document a foreign remote-work engagement, DTV may be the first route to assess. That works only if the purpose matches what you actually do. After an approved extension of a specific DTV stay by up to 180 days, plan to exit and re-enter under the still-valid multiple-entry visa for another stay; any new entry and stamp remain subject to immigration assessment.

DTV is not blanket authorization to take a Thai job or manage every kind of business from Thailand. A cheaper application does not make an undocumented purpose suitable. Our DTV analysis examines the work, family, and tax decisions in detail.

LTR: The qualifying category matters more than the words “long term”

The BOI lists four main categories: Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals, and Highly Skilled Professionals. Income, assets, investments, insurance, employer, and professional criteria differ. The BOI says applicable conditions must be maintained throughout the visa term. Being wealthy or calling yourself a resident does not, on its own, establish eligibility.

Dependents require their own applications. Published BOI and Interior Ministry materials do not yet align on expanded rights for parents and larger families; the operative rule has to be established for the particular household.

An especially important distinction for business owners: Work-from-Thailand Professionals need qualifying employment with an overseas company under BOI criteria; independent contractors do not automatically meet that category. According to the BOI, they do not receive a Thai digital work permit for local employment. Other LTR categories and Thai employment routes involve different rights and procedures.

A table that simply says “LTR permits work” is misleading. If you intend to manage a Thai entity or accept a job there, examine that precise activity and the required authorization separately. Our LTR analysis works through all four categories, their evidence, and the family question.

Your intended activityTake employment or perform substantial operations for a Thai companyExamine firstAn appropriate work and residence routeWhat might change the recommendationA Privilege or DTV card alone does not cover the activity

The sequence is part of the answer: Define purpose and work first. Then establish which route and which dependents qualify. Only then compare full costs and your actual travel pattern. Do not buy the longest advertised visa term and ask afterward whether your plans are allowed.

A direct cost test for an individual: Bronze currently commits THB 650,000 in membership fees, around USD 19,400. The Thai embassy in Helsinki lists a EUR 350 DTV visa fee (about USD 400 at the September 28 ECB reference rates); its required bank balance is evidence of funds, not a membership payment. The BOI lists a THB 50,000 LTR processing fee per person when issued in Thailand (about USD 1,490); overseas issuance may cost more.

This does not prove DTV or LTR is cheaper in total for every applicant: DTV requires a documented purpose and evidence, LTR a qualifying category with continuing conditions, and neither supplies the Privilege services. If you qualify and do not need those services, justify the membership premium explicitly.

If you do not qualify, you cannot simply buy the lower-priced route.

Work, Entry Stamps, and the Tax Calendar: Which 180 Days Matter?

Entry periods, work, and tax days require separate tests.

The number 180 appears in different contexts. For DTV, it initially concerns days per entry. For Thai tax residency, it concerns at least 180 days in a calendar year. Those are different tests. Neither your visa nor a day count tells you by itself what work you may perform in Thailand.

Number or documentWhat question does it address? What does it leave unresolved?
Number or documentDTV: 180 days per entryWhat question does it address?Initial permissible stay on the stamp issued for that DTV entryWhat does it leave unresolved?Calendar-year tax residence; general permission to work
Number or documentPE: generally one year per entryWhat question does it address? The stay framework described for the relevant Privilege Entry VisaWhat does it leave unresolved?Continuous stay for the whole membership term; work rights
Number or documentTax calendar: at least 180 days in the yearWhat question does it address?Whether the Thai day threshold for tax residence is reached in that yearWhat does it leave unresolved?Which income is taxable in your circumstances; whether your visa may be extended

A simple example makes the separation concrete. You arrive in November and leave in March after a total of 120 days. That trip alone does not cross the 180-day threshold in either calendar year, although other trips in those years must be added. A family spending 220 days in Bangkok between January and August has a different tax question even if everyone holds longer visa stamps.

Before booking the next stay, add every day in both calendar years and have the income and existing tax residence assessed. A founder directing a business during those months must also describe the actual work. The calendar now triggers a decision.

Thailand's Revenue Department has explained the treatment of certain foreign income brought into Thailand by people meeting the Thai residence threshold since 2024. Thai-source income may raise separate issues. Income type, year earned, actual remittances, existing home-country status, and any applicable treaty all matter.

Privilege is not a tax exemption; DTV does not give you 180 tax-free days. Your actual tax position calls for professionally reviewed day counts over at least two calendar years.

Work must be assessed independently too. Membership alone provides no general permission to work. A DTV workcation has a documented purpose but does not cover every local activity. LTR work rights depend on the category and the relevant process. Before moving or beginning work, write down where you will be, who your client or employer is, which entity is involved, what role you perform, and what you will actually do. Have qualified professionals assess that description. If the work changes, reopen the visa decision.

How Much Are You Committing, Alone or With Family?

The household needs a written all-member price.

On September 28, 2026, the operator lists five tiers. These are membership fees for a principal member, not household prices, and they do not guarantee that any supplemental promotion will still apply when you pay. A larger price tag does not automatically produce a better fit. Reserve is offered by invitation only.

Currency conversion as of September 28, 2026: The European Central Bank publishes EUR 1 = THB 38.196 and EUR 1 = USD 1.1378. The rounded US dollar figures below are derived from those two reference rates, not a payment quote or bank exchange rate. Exchange rates, fees, and the payment date can change your actual cost.

The individual calculation in Chapter 2 shows how usage and the tier premium relate. A different factor enters here: a ten-year or longer commitment. Platinum extends the horizon and is the starting tier for certain dependent options, but it is not automatically more economical for someone traveling alone. Dividing THB 1.5 million by ten does not account for an early change of plan, money paid up front, benefits you may never use, or the current contract and refund terms.

Family math: Count people before applying a discount

Take two adults and one child. Assume all three qualify under the current terms for a Platinum configuration and that each of the two supplemental members is charged the stated regular THB 1 million rate. A principal fee of THB 1.5 million plus two supplemental fees of THB 1 million yields THB 3.5 million (approximately USD 104,300) over ten years, excluding other costs.

That is a conditional illustration, not an offer confirmed for this family and not an annual installment plan. Obtain written confirmation of eligibility, the current rate, each dependent's status, point allocation, and governing terms.

A caution on shopping by search result: The operator's homepage advertises a Next Member promotion, while other operator documents and older addenda show different amounts or expired periods. A search snippet is not a binding household quote. We therefore use no promotional price in the illustration. Apply any potential discount to the decision only after a current written quote confirms the eligible people, tier, amount, and deadline.

For DTV and LTR, include separate applications, evidence and fees for each eligible dependent in the household comparison. The visible Privilege quote is only one column of that calculation.

A household needs five numbers: the price for each person, one-time and ongoing incidental costs, actual intended time in Thailand, the value of services you will use, and the amount you commit irrevocably today. The most expensive decision might be a seemingly inexpensive offer that fails to cover a family member whose status is essential.

The family's next step: Obtain written terms for every person. Only after the total price, school timetable, and residence route for all three are confirmed should the household release the membership payment.

What Else Must Work, and Where Does Real Estate Fit?

The international choice has to work in Thailand.

A second place to live becomes useful in the right order: Describe your days and actual activities; identify every person and necessary document; establish the residence route and full price; confirm local procedures; only then make binding school, lease, or purchase commitments. The sequence may differ if an investment already made is required to qualify under a particular LTR category. Precisely in that situation, examine the specific category professionally before buying.

Real estate is a No Borders Founder service and a separate decision

A Privilege Entry Visa does not grant foreigners a general right to own Thai land. Buying a condominium does not automatically qualify you for Privilege membership. Thailand's official portal describes a ceiling on the foreign-owned share of a condominium's total area and confirmation of the available foreign quota by the condominium's management. Foreign ownership of land follows considerably stricter rules.

A supposedly “freehold villa” therefore needs to be broken down into land title, building rights, contract chain, use rights, and eventual exit.

A buyer is considering a condo in Phuket. The developer wants a reservation payment; the buyer would occupy it for several months and might later rent it out. Two decisions now run in parallel. Stay: Which route covers the buyer's days, family members, and activities? Asset: Is title sound, the foreign quota available, the money trail documented, and the property economically sensible after operating costs, rentals, and a realistic resale price? A trial stay or a genuinely reversible option may create time for both assessments.

“A title deed does not answer a visa question. And a visa card does not turn a weak property into a good investment.”

— Alexander Erber · No Borders Founder

In some LTR categories, a qualifying investment already held in Thailand can matter. Whether and how a particular property counts depends on the BOI requirements for the specific category, together with other asset, income, and insurance criteria. This is not a general “buy a home and get a visa” scheme. The acquisition still requires its own title and investment review.

The connection: International judgment, Thai practice, qualified review

1. Route and alternative. No Borders Founder compares Privilege, DTV, the LTR category you can actually qualify for, and an employment route where relevant. We record what fact would change the recommendation: a new client, more days in Thailand, an eligible family member, a different property, or the evidence required for a BOI category.

2. Local feedback. Under a separately agreed implementation engagement, our Thailand Country Lead brings the planned entries, documents, and application questions together in the Phuket case. They confirm the process, appointment sequence, and requested documents with the responsible offices before a payment or reservation becomes binding. Local experience is a practical advantage, not special treatment or a substitute for an official determination.

3. Property, if you intend to buy. Our International Real Estate service examines the purpose of use, asset, ownership rights, money trail, operations, and exit. Qualified local professionals carry out reserved title, contract, and legal work. A sound residence route does not rescue a weak property; a sound property does not grant work rights.

A deeper engagement may produce a Thailand Decision Record: recommended route and alternative, family members, costs, a calendar spanning two tax years, description of work, next binding action, missing evidence, responsible professionals, and a review date. It is a reasoned tool for coordination and decision-making, not a legal opinion or government guarantee.

Should You Buy Thailand Privilege Now?

Every commitment needs a defensible route.

Return to the person at the beginning, now looking at the payment instructions. Thailand should become more than the memory of a trip. Privilege may be an excellent choice when repeated access and the services are genuinely useful. The length of a membership does not settle the work, family, or tax questions. The route wins when its actual scope, permissible activities, household cost, and local implementation fit the same life.

This is where our paid assessment begins: In a personal 60-minute initial consultation, Alexander Erber reviews your proposed stay, actual work, family, available quotes, and next binding decision. The result is an initial oral recommendation of the route to examine and a defined list of unresolved questions. The currently listed private-client price is USD 1,100 total in this US-facing offer.

Applicable tax treatment and scope for business clients require separate clarification. A written Thailand Decision Record, local implementation, and property review are separate engagements, not silently included in the initial meeting. Check engagement fit before paying for membership, a school commitment, or a property.

Thailand Privilege decision FAQs

1. Is Thailand Elite now called Thailand Privilege?

Yes. The new brand and tier structure began in 2023. Older memberships were not automatically converted to current tiers; your original contract is the first source for your own rights.

2. How long may I stay on each Thailand Privilege entry?

For the relevant PE Visa, the operator generally describes one year per entry. The stamp actually issued, visa and passport validity, extensions if needed, and reporting duties control your case.

3. Can I work in Thailand with Thailand Privilege?

Membership alone confers no general work authorization. Your actual activities need to be reviewed and, where necessary, matched to a different route.

4. What is the DTV?

The Destination Thailand Visa is a purpose-specific visa that includes documented workcations, certain activities, and eligible dependents. It is not blanket permission for every kind of work in Thailand.

5. Does a DTV give me 180 tax-free days?

No. The 180 days per DTV entry initially concern your permission to stay. Thai tax residence is assessed by calendar year, while the taxation of income depends on additional facts.

6. Is LTR better if I am wealthy?

Only if you meet a specific BOI category's initial and continuing conditions and its actual rights suit your plan. Wealth alone does not decide the result.

7. Are my spouse or children automatically covered by Privilege?

No. Check eligibility, separate applications, and fees for each person in writing. DTV and LTR have different dependent rules.

8. How much does membership cost in US dollars?

At the ECB reference rates for September 28, 2026, Bronze at THB 650,000 is approximately USD 19,400. All USD amounts are rounded illustrations; exchange rates and payment costs can change.

9. Does a condo purchase qualify me for Privilege, or does Privilege let me own Thai land?

Neither follows automatically. Visa and title require separate assessment; any qualifying investment under a specific LTR category must be established on its own facts.

10. What happens in my first No Borders Founder consultation?

A personal, 60-minute review of your stay, work, family, and next binding commitment, plus an initial oral recommendation about the route and evidence to examine first. A written professional review and implementation are separately commissioned.
