In July 2026, German courts registered 2,373 corporate insolvency filings, eight percent more than a year earlier.

If you own a business with one major customer, the relevant question is more specific: How much of your available cash depends on that customer's next payment?

A mixed national picture does not settle your own calculation. Which development could reach your obligations? How long would it take to make another route usable?
In these conversations, I often hear: “Let's wait and see.”
That can sound sensible. Yet it contains an assumption: that the option you may need will still be available later—and that you can put it in place fast enough. Have you tested that assumption?
I want to walk you through this decision. We will start with the situation and the evidence. Then we will examine your dependencies, your available choices, and the decisions you may need to make.
By the end, you should be able to name the option worth preparing, identify what already works, and assign the next step to a responsible person.
Is Germany finished—and what would that mean for you?
Is Germany finished? The available data do not support that conclusion.
Official data show pressure on businesses and prices, alongside economic growth.
The term “economic crisis” does not describe the same situation for every business or family.
The question you can test is this: How could the pressure reach you, and would your alternative be ready by then?
Picture a business owner at his desk. In front of him are a supplier's new price list, the impending renewal of his credit line, and a message from home: What would we do if we had to live somewhere else for a while?
He wants to keep running the company without pushing his family into a rushed relocation decision.
At that desk, it becomes clear that the three questions are connected. Yet nobody has been given the job of resolving them. This is a hypothetical scene; you can apply the same test to your own situation.
Which route reaches you?
An insolvency figure matters to you when the failure of a customer or supplier affects your performance or cash receipts. A producer-price index reaches your margin through specific purchase and sales contracts.
KfW's credit figure is a survey of firms seeking credit. It is not a rejection rate for every German company. Check your next credit or refinancing date before turning a headline into a decision.
For a family without a business, the first point of contact may be different: purchasing power, income, care, or the question of who can act if the person holding every authorization becomes unavailable.
Consumer prices in September 2026 were 3.3 percent above their year-earlier level. That does not describe the price increase experienced by every household.

Recalculate your recurring obligations at today's prices. Then check who could make an immediate decision if the normal process were interrupted.
Where several family members, authorizations, and residences are involved, those questions belong in one review of family locations and decision rights.
At No Borders Founder, we organize the personal situation, expose dependencies and sequence, and coordinate when tax, legal, residence, family, and business questions affect one another.
The result may be an orderly move. It may just as well be a well-founded decision to stay, supported by a functioning second route.
“Let's wait and see”: How much time are you assuming you will have?
The owner in our hypothetical case could observe conditions for another year. His market may improve. Financing may ease.
Observation alone does not create a Plan B. The route must be established and tested before he can use it.
Moving a company within the EU can involve notification, filing, and approval steps, depending on its legal form and destination.
Germany's federal service portal expressly recommends planning early. Other destinations have different rules.
A family has to account for daily life. A company still has to make decisions, pay, deliver, and remain reachable. No generic online checklist can give you one reliable lead time for all of that.
The question is: How long would your specific alternative take, from the first professional assignment to a lawful, tested function?
If you do not know that duration, “later” is an unknown variable. We should fill it with the actual steps of your route, not a feeling.
I would begin with one function you cannot afford to lose. For this business owner, it is the ability to manage customer orders while he temporarily lives with his family at a second location.
For a sole proprietor, the observable trigger may be the next customer deliverable that cannot be postponed. Before that date, he needs to know whether the work, contract performance, and payment are lawful and workable from the other location.
For a family, the critical function may be the care of a relative. Before a possible journey, authority to act, access to documents, and care at the specific destination must be clarified. Write down your one function.
Through which chain could pressure reach you?
Credit risk, cost increases, and possible crisis paths can reach you through different channels.
For your own decision, I would turn them into a working method.
Trace the consequences.
Which initial change reaches which obligation? Where could you still act?
For our business owner, the chain starts with a more expensive input. His customer contract permits a price adjustment only later. In the meantime, the company ties up more cash—precisely when it needs its credit line.
Whether that chain is real for him depends on his contracts, margin, payment terms, and bank agreement, not the national average.
Another chain runs through relationships. A key supplier fails, or a major customer pays late. The business is short of replacement goods or cash.
The operational test is direct: Who may place a replacement order? Which contract clause applies? Who tells the team? Who can keep the promise made to the customer?
The German BSI continuity standard shows how critical processes depend on IT, supply chains, and other participants—and why alternative routes need to be practiced.
A third chain is easy to miss. The invoice has been issued and the work done, but payment arrives late.
Wages, rent and household bills still come due.
How many payments can you cover with funds you can actually access today?
Run that calculation with your next customer payment delayed. Put due dates, available liquidity, and signing authority next to each other.
An account balance helps only if the right person can lawfully and practically access it.
The reserve you may need depends on the payments due.
Write two if–then questions for your own case:
If your costs rise faster than your prices, how long can your liquidity carry you?
If a customer also pays late—or the bank does not renew your line—which obligation falls due first?
Ask separately in each case: Who can decide? Which funds can the business actually reach? If the answer is open, you have found your first assignment.
If the assumed chain cannot reach your business, cross it out.
That is also clarity.
Is your Plan B an idea, an established route, or a usable option?
A second bank account, an overseas address, or the idea of moving later may be useful components. None proves on its own that a family may live there, or that a company may be managed there and meet its obligations.
In our hypothetical case, the owner might identify a residence route and still be blocked by unresolved management authority or customer approvals.
HOW READY IS YOUR SECOND ROUTE?
- 01Considered: You know a possible route.
- 02Established: Rights, responsibilities, contracts, and required specialist reviews have been clarified.
- 03Tested: A limited, lawful exercise shows the essential function works.
This distinction guards against a common false comfort: a complete-looking set of documents may still depend on one person, one approval, or one bank.
For each component, ask: What can I initiate today? What must a third party approve? What am I merely assuming?
Record the answers in your worksheet.
For some people, the tax consequences of leaving Germany can arise from their ownership structure. Section 6 of Germany's Foreign Tax Act concerns defined cases.
Whether it applies to you needs specialist review before you structure a move.
Residence rights and corporate management each require their own evidence.
Our analysis of sequencing before an actual move goes further into those specialist questions.
Is your Plan B an option you could use—or is the thought of it simply reassuring?
If something remains open, name it and commission the necessary clarification.
Our analysis of decision capacity under pressure examines what happens when an established route is tested.
A second route does not always begin with leaving Germany.
If you intend to stay, you can still test whether customer work, delegated authority, documents, payment channels, and, where relevant, access to assets depend on a single counterparty or location.
Whether additional accounts, custody locations, or structures are lawful and useful is a separate professional and economic decision. An internationally spread investment is not, by itself, a crisis plan. It must fit your rights, obligations, costs, and real ability to access it.
The useful principle is to reduce dependence on one point of failure. It is not a blanket investment recommendation.
Your lead-time worksheet
Use the worksheet in the article to record one essential function and print it if useful. No Borders Founder does not transmit or store what you enter there. Leave unknowns open. Do not invent an agency timeline or a third party's approval.
Start with one function.
Complete the fields for your situation.
We do not transmit or store your entries.
You can print the worksheet for your records.
What must remain possible after an interruption or a move?
No transmission to No Borders Founder. No storage by this form.
Filling it in often reveals the difference between information and preparation.
A blank line with an owner is an assignment. A blank line without one remains a risk.
Here is how a first entry might look for our hypothetical owner.
- 01Function
- He wants to manage an existing customer order lawfully and receive payment even if he and his family temporarily live at a second European location.
- 02Trigger
- A customer requires a firm commitment to deliver a future project from there.
- 03Current position
- The route has been considered, but residence, corporate management, and tax effects are unresolved.
- 04First assignment
- The appropriate legal and tax specialists review these questions. Duration remains unknown until the procedures and participants are identified.
- 05Next decision
- Only then does he arrange housing, authority to act, and contract and payment access. If the confirmed lead time exceeds the customer's deadline, he must organize the order differently or renegotiate the date. The worksheet therefore leads to a decision rather than merely collecting gaps.
If your worksheet reveals an unresolved cross-border issue, that does not mean you must move. The Engagement Fit review starts by determining whether we are the right people for your question.
In a paid initial briefing, we define the decision to be examined. The concrete diagnosis and sequence are developed in a commissioned strategic engagement. That way you know what will be examined—and what result to expect—before the next step.
When would a Plan B be too late?
A Plan B starts too late if its confirmed setup, specialist review, test, and your own buffer take longer than the decision window you have set.
That is not an official crisis deadline. It is the calculation for your route. Let's work through it.
Our hypothetical owner wants to keep working in Germany. He also wants a second European route prepared far enough that, if a trigger he defines occurs, his family could live there lawfully while he remains able to direct customer decisions.
He does not want a nominal address. He wants to know whether daily life, his corporate role, and the business can function together. Whether that is possible and sensible in his case remains open.
That is why specialist review comes first.
I would ask him first: What exactly must work at the second location on the first working day?
His answer: The family can live there and obtain the care it needs. He can manage a customer order and authorize a contractual decision, while his German company remains organized lawfully for legal and tax purposes. That is the function he needs.
Now we put the dependencies on the table. He and his specialists need a sequence they can actually carry out:
- 01Clarify the route with the relevant specialists. For each family member, which residence and registration routes could apply? For him, which role may he perform from which location, and what tax consequences would a change of residence or management have?Only then can he accept or reject it.
- 02Prepare family, company, and access.Housing, corporate management, authorizations, and access to contracts, payments, and data may be prepared in parallel where the specialist review permits that order.
- 03Test the decisive function.A limited, lawful exercise must show whether family life, customer work, and company management function together.Merely having an account or address is not a test.
- 04Compare lead time with the decision window.Use the longest dependent chain of steps, plus testing and your own buffer.Agency and bank lead times remain open until the responsible parties confirm them.
If a corporate decision must precede bank access, for example, those steps are sequential.
The federal portal's guidance on early planning for an EU company move shows why legal form and destination need separate review. It does not supply a duration for this hypothetical case.
The next assignment is specific: Name the first unresolved precondition, the person responsible for it, and the date on which you expect a reliable answer.
What would count as a test?
Start with a simulation. Who answers the customer call? Who is authorized to sign? Which approved access channel carries the work? Who organizes the family's needs?
An actual, limited stay involving business activity at the second location should be considered as a test only after the relevant specialist clearances. A successful weekend does not, by itself, establish tax residence or durable corporate management. The test must cover the function you identified.
Then run a disrupted workday. The usual decision maker is unavailable for several hours. A contractual commitment and a payment are due, and a family member needs a decision.
Who detects the signal? Who activates the substitute? Which approved access rights work? What remains undone by evening?
Record the gap rather than treating a smooth rehearsal as proof of general resilience. Where a real test could create legal or tax effects, begin with simulation and specialist clearance.
Put your triggers in three levels:
A signal to watch without changing the route.
A signal to complete missing approvals and access immediately.
A signal to use the route already prepared.
For each level, specify who identifies it and who decides. If you start the first specialist review only at the third level, your Plan B is not ready to use.
Only then can the owner compare the confirmed path with his own decision window.
If the path takes longer, he cannot wait for the trigger to begin building it.
Once established and tested, he can choose to remain in Germany. He can then recheck the conditions regularly.
The time to act follows from his dependencies, not from a prediction about Germany.
Return to your own worksheet. Which specialist clearance is the first missing step? Which work can follow in parallel? Which real test must precede your decision?
If you commission only one thing today, commission the clarification of the unknown step holding every other step back.
For a sole proprietor, the first path may be narrower. Before the next customer task that cannot move, check whether contract performance, permission to work, payment, and personal availability align at the second location.
He may not need a new company.
For a family without a business, the critical path may instead involve residence rights, care, daily support, and delegated authority. A family office must also ask whether one person or counterparty could block several companies, asset access routes, and countries at once.
Four readers, four different bottlenecks. There is no universal action list.
Security and family: What can you responsibly prepare now?
The security environment in Europe is part of this conversation.
In 2026, NATO described a deteriorated security environment and requirements for civilian resilience. That does not provide a date for war in Germany.
For a family and a company, it raises a different question: Who can be reached, who can decide, and which care or service must continue during an interruption?
On Germany's new military service framework, the Bundeswehr states that service itself is voluntary. For men born in 2008 or later, the questionnaire and medical examination are already mandatory; examination capacity is being developed in stages.
Registration or examination is not the same as being called up. Anyone with a specific family or business question should have current law and individual obligations professionally reviewed. A change of location is not presented here as a way around applicable duties.
In the worksheet, security is one possible trigger among several, not a script. Practical preparation may cover communication, care, delegated authority, and a residence route you can lawfully access. Your circumstances determine what is sensible.
For the person responsible for family decisions, the first task is to name someone who may take charge of care, documents, and necessary decisions during your absence. Check that person's authority and availability before treating a second home as the answer.
Our analysis of Germany's state-of-tension rules separates duties from business and asset questions.
When several parts are connected, your Plan B needs a guided sequence.
Family, business, payment access, and decision makers must work together.
The engagement comparison shows the outputs and responsibilities we agree for a decision across disciplines.
See engagements and outcomesDo you need a Plan C—or would it only add work?
A second route helps only if it does not fail at the same critical point as the first.
If Plans A and B rely on the same sole authorized signatory, bank connection, or irreplaceable supplier, you may have two plans on one foundation. You may need better delegated authority—or a genuinely independent third route.
Plan C is not a badge of preparedness.
Another company, bank, or residence may create rights and choices, but also costs, obligations, and coordination work.
In our owner's case, delegated authority within Germany is an important part of Plan A.
The second location becomes Plan B only when his family and company can use it together.
If both routes need the same person for every approval, or the same banking access for due payments, he first needs to address that shared weakness and test lawful access. A third location would not remove it automatically.
Must you leave Germany? No.
A lawfully prepared alternative may be precisely what allows you to choose to stay.
For our hypothetical owner, that is a conscious outcome. He keeps family and business in Germany, knows which approvals the second route requires, and has defined the observable trigger for another review.
If taxes are the reason you are considering a move, our analysis of moving abroad for tax reasons addresses that distinct question.
Who this work is for—and why we work in this order
We work with decision makers for whom one isolated answer can have consequences elsewhere.
That includes business owners with companies and families, and sole proprietors whose work and income depend directly on their personal capacity. It includes families with residence and care questions, and people responsible for multiple asset or company structures.
Tax advisers, lawyers, business law firms, and family offices may also bring us in when an overall decision across disciplines and jurisdictions needs to be led. Each specialist retains responsibility for their professional opinion.
We begin with the objective, the people involved, the time frame, and a shared factual basis. We then compare possible routes, identify dependencies and stop points, and formulate precise questions for the appropriate specialists.
Their answers feed into a documented decision with assigned owners and a review date.
Why only in this order?
Because resolving a residence, tax, or banking issue in isolation may change the other decisions. Acting before specialist clarification may close off an option you intended to preserve.
The deliverable depends on the decision burden: a written answer to one limited question, a joint memorandum for two connected questions, or a coordinated blueprint across several fields. We can coordinate an approved plan under a separate assignment.
For the owner at his desk, that means he is not buying a prefabricated “overseas Plan B.” He receives a justified sequence that lets him make the next decision.
Think about what happens afterward
Picture the same owner after a lawfully prepared change. His family knows who organizes daily life at the new location. A designated managing director or authorized representative handles approved responsibilities within the company. A customer receives an answer because the communication route and responsibility were tested beforehand.
This is a desired future state, not a claimed client outcome. Whether it is attainable in his case depends on the earlier review.
Many plans end on the day of the move. Yet much of a company's value lies in relationships: customers, suppliers, the team, trust, decisions, and knowledge.
If work is to continue somewhere else, somebody must place orders, answer customers, perform contracts, and lead employees. For a family, the equivalent questions concern care, everyday life, and belonging.
Ask yourself: What must keep working in the first operational phase after a change?
Name three services or relationships. Who maintains them? How will you test responsibility? What would actually sustain you at the new location?
A second location begins before arrival. It needs relationships, rights, and a daily routine that works.
An existing network can make it easier to settle at a second location. What matters is who can help you solve a specific task there.
Who could help you there with a family need, a customer task, or daily life?
A place becomes an option only when practical relationships and daily life accompany formal rights. You can begin that work while still living in Germany.
What follows a change can also create opportunity. Better delegated authority can free up the owner. In our hypothetical case, the second location would become a market only if an identifiable customer actually bought the service there and a local partner could carry the necessary part of delivery. Both relationships belong in the test before a change.
A family can decide more calmly when it knows its routes. The second location then becomes a usable possibility with tested conditions—not merely another dot on the map.
YOUR NEXT DECISION
Which decision is yours now?
Look at your lead-time worksheet. Can you complete three sentences?
First: “I can keep this essential function working today, even under the interruption I have described.”
Second: “This precondition is still missing; this person will clarify it by our agreed review date.”
Third: “If this observable signal occurs, I will decide whether to stay, change course, or prepare another route.”
If you can honestly affirm the first statement, that is a strong result. Germany may remain the right location for you, and your existing structure may be enough.
If you cannot, you do not need a dramatic crisis date. You need a sequence, responsible people, the necessary specialist reviews, and a test.
Waiting will not preserve an option that has yet to be built.
Print your completed worksheet or share this analysis if you want to work through these questions with your family or business partners.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions about Plan B during an economic crisis
Is Germany in an economic crisis?
The picture is mixed.
Official data show pressure in insolvencies, prices, and credit conditions, while economic output also grew in the second quarter of 2026.
What matters for your decision is which development actually reaches your obligations.
Is Germany finished?
The data show economic strain and growth at the same time.
For your Plan B, the useful question is which development reaches your own obligations and how much lead time your alternative requires.
How long will Germany's economic difficulties last?
There is no reliable end date.
What you can calculate is the confirmed lead time of your own alternative: the specialist review, setup, and test needed before an essential function works.
When is a Plan B ready to use?
When the essential function is lawfully established and a limited test has shown that people, approvals, access, and procedures work together.
Do I have to leave Germany to have a Plan B?
No.
A second route can secure delegated authority, document access, payment capability, and customer work while you remain in Germany.
How much time should I allow for a Plan B?
There is no universal deadline.
Map the steps from the first specialist assignment to a tested function, and mark every third-party approval or review whose duration is still unconfirmed.
What should a business owner with a family check first?
Name one essential function and its first bottleneck.
Then test who may make decisions for the family and company, which services must continue, and what funds and access are actually available.
When would I need a Plan C as well?
When Plans A and B could both fail because they rely on the same person, bank, approval, or other critical dependency.
Examine that shared weak point first.
